Attorney Jack Zuger attended the prestigious International Association of Defense Counsel’s (IADC) 47th Annual Trial Academy between July 27 and August 2, 2019. The Trial Academy, which is held at Stanford Law School, provides intensive, comprehensive instruction and participation as a way to enhance the trial advocacy skills of the participants. The faculty and students were comprised of some of the best and brightest lawyers from throughout the United States and several foreign countries. Jack was the only lawyer present from North Dakota. The Trial Academy emphasizes “learning by doing” method of instruction—Jack conducted opening statement, direct and cross examination of lay witnesses, direct and cross examination of medical doctors and economists, and closing argument. Each of the exercises was video-recorded, and was followed by a one-on-one review session with faculty. After successfully completing the 7-day program, Jack graduated from the Trial Academy. Despite already having considerable trial experience, Jack found the experience to be extremely rewarding and informative.
